Developing Comprehension Skill Of A Child

Developing child's comprehension skills, means kids being able to fully understand and follow information they are listening to and watching. Being a parent it is our concern to help kids develop their skill. So that they understand what they read, view or hear.

This becomes tough job specially for working parents. From my experience I can say, parents should start instilling this skill in their kids at an early age. We all want our kid to be smart, intelligent and outperformer. In short we want them to be genius. Had we ever asked from ourselves, what special are we doing to help them to acquire these distinct qualities?

I started working on this, when my child was of 2 years. I tell him story when we go to sleep daily. Kids listen to it very carefully. After all, which child doesn’t like to listen to story? Sometime I read story with him. Then I ask him questions based on story such as main idea of the story, moral of the story, about different characters etc. He also took interest in this. Active participation makes this activity enjoyable for both of us. This technique developed not only one skill but many. This has sharpened his listening skill, vocabulary, comprehending skill and thinking skill.

I still practice this small exercise, but in various form. Now he is of 8 yes and have developed habit of reading, ask many questions, and express his ideas brilliantly.

I recently found a website http://educationwithfun.com . We can find stories as well as question related to it. It can be downloaded for offline practice. To develop deeper understanding a child should be able to highlight, summarize, and review important ideas and for this good practice is required.
